Getting Ahead in Your Garden pt 2

What should I be doing in my garden this year?

We all have New Years Resolutions each year, and plan to plan ahead! So how can we plan ahead in our gardens, and make sure we are thinking about the future and how our needs are changing for our outdoor space? Where do we get garden design ideas and garden design inspiration?

Planting Ideas for the Garden

Gardens are ever-changing, ever-growing, ever-moving spaces! We cannot keep a garden static. They grow, they die; we grow, our needs change. As such, we need to keep saving ideas as they way we use the garden changes. This BLOG is split into 2 brief sections - Keeping onto of the garden this coming year, and planning for the future.

If it is Garden Design Ideas you need for your changing needs, growing family, change of lifestyle, and you are not sure where to start, then we recommend get some inspiration. You don’t even need to leave the comfort of your warm and cosy lounge to do this!

Armchair Inspiration

There are a few great magazines out there for ideas. The English Garden, Gardens Illustrated and The Garden Design Journal are all good for ideas. Some have great offers on and you need only subscribe to a few months, or a year, unless of course you get the bug and get hooked with looking at other peoples gardens!

Pinterest is a wonderful resource. People Pin all sorts these days, from moustache design to eco-living, from holiday ideas to Garden Design. So if you don’t already pin, then I’d say start! It’s a great time filler when you are on your commute, waiting for the kettle to boil, chilling at breakfast over your morning coffee. Pinning only need take a few minutes a day and you can then shut down the app and carry on with life, but in those few minutes you can have saved so many ideas and styles you like. Refining your boards, and deleting your initial thoughts (this is usual as your searches become more refined and your focus becomes clearer) can come when you have more time. You can see examples of my Boards here.

Inspiration When Out ‘n About

The other things to do is visit other peoples gardens! Be nosey! Find out what you like, and just as importantly - don’t like!

This includes Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Show and the like. Yes, these are often high end designer gardens, over designed to highlight skill and push boundaries, but there are ideas to be found within these none the less.

The National Garden Scheme has many gardens all around the UK to visit, so even if you are on your holidays, you can find a garden nearby. RHS and National Trust gardens are always worth going to. They even give labels for many plants! So if one catches your eye, then take a photo, like I do!

If you would like to be reminded on what to do when in the garden, and have some design inspirations sent out to you, then you can sign up to our Occasional Newsletter here. This newsletter focuses on garden maintenance, design and planting ideas, gardens to visit in the South East and more.
