Hannah Peschar - Sculpture Garden

Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden is a really inspiration and exciting place to visit. There are around 200 pieces of sculpture by around 50 artists. Pieces are all for sale, so the exhibition is constantly changing - as soon as a sculpture has been sold, it can go to the new owner when they are ready.

The garden itself is sited in a valley and is very damp and earthy. Water is everywhere - a series of ponds weave through the site, and bridges allow the visitor to meander a series of paths that wind through trees and sculpture, until you start to feel hopelessly lost.

Some of the sculpture has been in situ for years and have become part of the backbone of the garden, along with the simple, repetitive plant palette that unifies the space and doesn't detract from the art. Green is the dominant colour. Serene and calm, damp and lush, wild and naturalistic, the garden is truly stunning.

The siting of the sculpture is really important. Tall thin pieces rise of the banks of the ponds, reaching up the canopy, drawing the eyes up to the tall pines. Torsos and faces reside in secluded spots, where they seem to be enjoying the silence, and separation from their fellow sculptures. Glass and metal reflects the sky and woodland canopy and while you look in on the piece, it allows you to experience the wider view. A pair of seats will sit by a tree stump, bringing in the rule of 3s. It is all so very well thought out.

The curator admits that some of the works are there to challenge you. Neon lights, pink glass and modernist, almost brutalist works jar with the garden, but still they work.

Sometimes it is good to be challenged!
